Default New spot fire near Sheridan Lake

There were 70 new spot fires started in the Cariboo Fire Centre region Tuesday night, with the majority of them ignited by lightning strikes.

The closet to Sheridan Lake is the fire at Bonaparte Lake and we are getting a little smokey haze over the lake today. The fire is less than one hectare in size and they have a significant number of firefighters backed up by helicopter and air tanker support working the fire.

Mayson Lake (southeast of Bonaparte Lake) (K20262)
Last updated: Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 10:24 AM

Location: Southeast end of Bonaparte Lake

Discovered: Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Size: 110.0 hectares

Status: Active
• 0% contained
Airtankers are currently working to protect homes affected by a wildfire burning at the south-east end of Bonaparte Lake, 22 kilometres north-west of Barriere. Airtankers are dropping fire retardant to slow the fires growth, focussing on the east flank of the fire, which is closest to homes. The fire has grown primarily to the north and south, away from homes. Fire suppression personnel are anticipating strong winds in the area this evening.

Interface: Interface Fire
Smoke from this fire is visible from Barriere and nearby communities, but the fire is not currently threatening the town.

Evacuation Order is in effect.

The Thompson Nicola Regional District has issued an evacuation order for residents living with 1.6 kilometres (1 mile) of Bonaparte Lake. For more information, call 1-866-377-7188. See a map of the affected area.

No further details available at this time.

Cause: Under Investigation
The fire was remapped at 110 hectares in size, the decrease in size due to more accurate GPS mapping. The fire experienced limited fire growth overnight, and is seeing rank 1-2 fire behaviour this morning (a smouldering ground fire with some areas of open flame).

Resources
• 30 firefighters
• 6 helicopters
30 personnel are on site with 11 Structural protection unit (sprinkler system) personnel setting up sprinklers on the homes in the area. Various heavy equipment are also working the fire, with six helicopters for bucketing support.

More resources are currently on route, and a specialized Incident Management Team has taken over command of the fire today.

Smoke from this fire is visible from Barriere and nearby communities, but the fire is not currently threatening the town. It’s a little smoky on Sheridan Lake this morning with a high haze. The fire was remapped at 110 hectares in size, the decrease in size due to more accurate GPS mapping. The fire has not seen substantial growth so far. It is burning rank 2 with pockets of rank 3 (a moderately vigorous surface fire); however it is burning fuel within the fire's perimeter.

The Thompson Nicola Regional District has downgraded the Evacuation Order to an Evacuation Alert for Electoral Area "E": the westerly half of Bonaparte Lake and area extending from the west end of the lake to a midpoint of the lake approximately 8 kilometers eastward which coincides with the easterly boundary of Electoral Area
